Hi Shah,

Glad you found the website and liked it. So nice to see people from all over the world finding their way to my project site.

The Silvertop is a really nice engine with an awesome soundtrack!

Enjoy it when you have finished the project!

Hello Patrieck,

Came across you site & felt happy to see like minded people around the world. I am in Peshawar City of Pakistan & have almost completed my 1994 Corolla GT Silver Top project.

Hi again Nick,

The AE101 is the Corolla that came after the AE92 models. Was build between 1992 and 1997.

The AE92 and AE101 both came with the 4A-GZE. The supercharged models were called the GT-Z.
But they are pretty scarce, so finding one might be a challenge.

Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback Patrieck,

I have heard mention of an AE101 before, but I cannot find what year, model, and trim level is an AE101. Do you know of any that came standard with a 4A-GZE as well? I think that would obviously be the ideal vehicle for me to find, to efficiently and economically do all the work I want to do.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your message and the kind words! Great to hear that my work has inspired you. All I can say is go for it!

In regards to your questions:

Your car has the 4A-F carb engine. That is still a member of the Toyota 4A engine family. So all other engines with an engine code that starts with 4A will physically drop right into your car.
Doing an engineswap like that, you will need to realize that although they belong in the same engine family, there are still quite a bit things different between both engines.
Best is to get a complete as possible engine with all the parts that go with it.
So yes, you will need the computer that belongs to that particular engine to be able to run it. Or go standalone with an aftermarket ECU running the engine.
I you would be able to source a complete front-cut (The complete front half of a donor car with all the parts still in it) that would be the easiest option by far. Only thing you would have to do is to swap all the parts over from one car to the other.
But it's probably the most expensive option as well, if you are still able to get one. Especially a decent and complete 4A-GZE is getting harder and harder to find.

Regarding the brakes:

My car was an 1988 Corolla. That meant it still used the 238mm diameter and 18mm thick brake discs and the older style brake calipers.
The AE92 had a mid-life facelift in 1990 where they also upgrades the brakes of the GT-S models to the 256mm diameter and 22mm thick brakes discs and bigger brake calipers.
Those brakes later became standard on the AE101 model Corolla's.

The brakes I rebuilt for my car came from a AE101, but are the exact same brakes as the 1990 and later AE92 GT-S's.
I got the complete setup, so I also have the bigger brake calipers.

Hi Patrieck,

I have the lower model AE92 SR5 model of the car, so the engine is carbureted. I want to do what you did and swap in either a 4A-GZE or a 20V 4A-GE. If I were to do that, do you know if I would need the computer from the AE92 GT-S or from the car I was taking the engine out of? Is the 20V 4A-GE also a direct bolt engine like you said the 4A-GZE is?

Another question I have is, did any front wheel drive models with the 4A-GZE motor come with the larger rotors that you installed? Wouldn't you have to swap out the calipers since the lager diameter rotors also have a larger thickness, or do the calipers on the AE92 have enough clearance for the added width and thickness?

I love the work you have done to your car. It has given me so many ideas for what I want to try to do to mine. Keep up the work.

Hi Daragh,

I actually still have the C52 gearbox. And since I am going to use the 4A-GZE engine with the E58 gearbox, I don't really have a use for the C52 anymore.
But I have quite a bit time, effort and money invested in that gearbox with the Quaife LSD and the rebuild, so not sure if it would be worth your while in that respect.

But shoot me an E-mail at [email protected] and maybe we can work something out...

hi - admired your work on the gearbox so much.
did you keep this or sell it? If you still have it I would be interested in buying it. Or perhaps, you would be interested in fixing a C52 box in the future? - mine needs rebuilding i feel. 1st to second is not smooth.

thanks for sharing your work,
hope to hear from you,

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to send me a message.
A supercharged AW11 must be such a fun car to drive. It's still high on my list of 'maybe someday'

I will do my best to keep it up. Progress is slow at the moment since I have a lot of other things to do and the car isn't really high on the priority list. But I'll try to update the website soon.

And yes, the internet is a blessing for us car guys!

Best regards,

Patrieck

I stumbled across your website while doing research for my AW11 Supercharged MR2 in California. I admire your project, enthusiasm, and documentation. Keep up the great work! Luckily with the internet, I can watch your progress and learn across the world.

Hi Jacob,

I'd like to discuss that with you in a little more detail with a few pictures for clarification.
But this guestbook is not really the place to do that. If you shoot me an E-mail, and I'll respond to that and give you my thoughts on that.

Best regards,

Webmaster Patrieck

Hi Patrieck
I just wanted to hear your opinion as you wrote you had worked on transmissions before. I have read that putting a brace between/connecting the input shaft to the output shaft is a good idea as it typically is the aluminium housing being the weak link.

Hi Jacob,

Well, first of all, the C52 was never designed to handle big power or torque. So it will always be a bit of a gamble.

I've read about people putting 200hp through them for years without problems.
I've also read people who just swap out the gearbox if it goes wrong. The C52 is a cheap gearbox and very easy to find as they were used in a lot of Toyota's. So they just had some spares lying around and swapped it out when neccesary.

Others kept snapping axles and had the gearbox go wrong with in months. So it's up to you what you feel comfortabele with.

Reinforcing it wouldn't really help, as any part of the gearbox can fail, from shafts to cogs to bearings, the shift mechanisme and synchros. How are you going to reinforce all of that?

Toyota themselves used the much biefier E series tranny for the supercharged cars with the 4A-GZE.

So just for sake of mind, I would source a E58 if at all possible
